The roadshow is aimed at younger drivers who are preparing to or have just started driving.

More than 1,600 second-level students from schools across Mayo are signed up to attend an upcoming road safety show, the first of its kind in the county since before the Covid-19 pandemic and the only one being held in Ireland.

Road safety officer with Mayo County Council Gary Smyth told last week’s meeting of Mayo Co Council's Roads and Transportation Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) that the AXA Roadsafe Roadshow will take place in the TF Royal Hotel and Theatre in Castlebar on Thursday, April 11.

The AXA Roadsafe Roadshow mixes theatre, video and first-hand accounts from Gardaí and emergency services to highlight the dangers of driving. Family members of victims of road accidents also share their stories.

Among the special guests at this year’s AXA Roadsafe Roadshow is Stevo Timothy, who is also known as online comedian ‘Farmer Michael’, who became wheelchair-bound after being involved in a motorcycle accident in which his passenger and friend died in 2005. Mr Timothy will tell students of the impact this incident had on his life.

Mr Smyth said Mayo was successful in securing the event ahead of several other counties and it is currently the only such event set to take place in Ireland.

It is also the first such event to take place in Mayo for four years and more than 1,600 second-level students have signed up to attend the roadshow.

“It is our main event for the year at engaging younger drivers who are preparing to or have just started driving,” he said.
