Major project for Westport site is set to go to tender

The old Convent site on Altamount Street in Westport is set for redevelopment works

An ambitious new development at the site of the old Convent of Mercy in Westport is expected to go to tender by the end of this month.

The finalisation of tender documents is currently underway for the project which will see a new library, civic office and community hub developed at the Altamount Street site.

Stage 2 approval has also been granted for the development of 18 housing units through Tuath Housing with completion expected in early 2025.

Mayo Co Council's Director of Services Katherine McConnell confirmed the news at last week’s Municipal District meeting. She said the local authority had recently held a productive meeting with the Department of Rural and Community Development, which is providing funding of around €9m for the project via the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF).

“The Department is aware that costs have gone beyond what they would have been when funding was initially announced in April 2021 and it remains supportive of seeing the project to completion,” she told councillors.

The site has been vacant for many years.
