Major funding for greenway project to run to Mayo-Sligo border

Independent Cllr Marie Casserly said the funding allocation for the proposed Sligo greenway is "fantastic news"

Funding of €700,000 has been allocated to the proposed Sligo Greenway, which will run from Collooney to Bellaghy on the Sligo-Mayo border.

Independent Councillor Marie Casserly has welcomed the money, which will be used to advance the next stages of the project.

The funding has been given by Transport Infrastructure Ireland as part of the national roads and greenway allocation.

Councillor Casserly said it is fantastic news and the money will be used to advance the next stages of the greenway.

“The department are so keen to give us the funding and keep it moving on to the next phase,” she told Midwest Radio. “When this project is complete not only will it provide sustainable travel and create jobs and business opportunities, but it is also going to create a safe place for families to enjoy the beauty of South Sligo.” The project received Transport Infrastructure Ireland approval last December to proceed from Phase one concept and feasibility stage to phase two options selection phase.

During phase one, the proposed project was developed, and the feasibility of the project was further investigated, to identify and find five preliminary route options.

The project management structure was also progressed during this period.

The second phase is assessing the five available options to determine the preferred choice after an examination of all feasible options along with their costs, benefits and environment impact.
