Major boost for novel tourism project in Killala Bay

The MV Shingle has been held by the Revenue Commissioners for almost a decade.
A major step forward has been taken in creating the first-ever artificial reef at a ship in Killala Bay.
Funding of €50,000 has been secured from the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme to advance this project.
The funding will cover the scoping of the project in addition to environmental planning costs.
The ship that will form the basis of the project, the MV Shingle, has been secured from the Revenue Commissioners and the Ships 2 Reef group is continuing to move the project forward.
The MV Shingle comes with an interesting history – it was being used to smuggle millions of cigarettes from Slovenia to Drogheda when it was intercepted by the authorities in the summer of 2014.
Minister of State Dara Calleary welcomed the news of funding for the project.
“I am delighted to assist the group in a project of unbridled potential for tourism in North Mayo,” he said.
