'Madness' of vacant homes in Mayo town addressed as purchase agreement is made

Mayo County Council have agreed to purchase nine vacant homes in Black Oak Rise in Newport.
Cllr Peter Flynn said he received confirmation from the Council of this yesterday and that discussions are ongoing in relation to 13 apartments in the estate.
“I have highlighted the madness of 22 vacant units during a housing crisis at every opportunity since elected in 2019 and I am relieved to see the Council Executive and the Department of Housing finally make progress,” he said.
“I hope this also means that the Council will finally take over the estate and build a badly needed footpath in to Newport town centre.”
