An iconic Mayo pub has closed its doors.
McLoughlin’s pub on Achill Sound has been trading since 1870 but Sunday marked the closure of the fourth-generation bar.
Owners Josie and Jackie McLoughlin's are retiring from the pub trade and their much-loved pub will be greatly missed by the community and visitors to Achill.
The What’s On in Achill facebook page led the tributes to the McLoughlin’s for the mark they made in Achill with the closure of the pub marking an ‘end of era.’ “It’s a sad farewell for Achill, but also a chance to say thank you for the welcome, the company and the happy memories that so many will carry with them,” said the post, “Thank you, Josie and Jackie. You’ll be greatly missed, and we hope you enjoy every moment of your well-earned retirement,” the tribute added.
Other well wishers said the McLoughlin’s warm welcome made the bar a ‘second home’ to many.
“McLoughlins will be missed, it’s been the back bone of the Sound for so many years,” stated another on social media.
