Lahardane man to make local election bid

A Lahardane native is hoping to be put forward as a candidate for the Social Democrat party in next year’s local elections in the Castlebar area.
Aidan Browne said at a community meeting held in Lahardane last Friday to discuss the future of the local GP service that he would be putting his name forward for the party’s upcoming selection convention that is expected to take place sometime in October.
If Mr Browne, who is aged 33, receives a nomination from his party, he will run as a candidate in the local elections next May in the Castlebar Municipal District.
Mr Browne, who works in media production, said he is passionate about the future of his local area and hopes to be selected at the upcoming convention.
Several candidates have already declared for the local election in Castlebar. Independent candidate Harry Barrett has put his name forward once again while Sinn Fein have selected two candidates, Tony Geraghty and Donna Hyland. With the seven sitting councillors all expected to run again, it looks set to be a crowded ballot in the Castlebar MD in 2024.
