"Her legacy is evident" - tributes to councillor on her passing

Margaret Adams

Warm tributes have been paid following the passing of Margaret Adams (nee Kenny), Kings Hill, Westport, a former councillor and a prominent figure in Fianna Fáil in Mayo for many years.

She died peacefully in the care of staff at Mayo-Roscommon Hospice, Castlebar last week.

Margaret was first elected to Westport Town Council in 1974 and would serve as Cathaoirleach on four occasions. She later served on Mayo County Council from 1999 to 2009 before retiring from public life.

She was a strong voice for Westport and the surrounding areas and was a trailblazer among women in politics in Mayo, as the first woman to be elected to Westport Town Council. Margaret was a leading figure in Fianna Fáil in west Mayo and served as constituency secretary for TD Seamus Hughes.

Minister for Social Protection and Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary said he was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Margaret Adams.

“She served with pride and ambition on Mayo County Council and on Westport Town Council. She was proud of her Fianna Fáil membership and party but didn’t let that get in the way of working cross party for the benefit of Westport.”

Her legacy is evident across Westport and Mayo. She was a serious politician but with a brilliant sense of mischief and humour. She was a font of wisdom and advice and never hesitated to tell me when she disagreed with me.”

“I will miss that advice, that sense of humour and mischief but most especially the friendship.”

Margaret will be sadly missed by her husband Cecil, son Dermot, daughter Deirdre, daughter in law Maeve, grandsons Kevin and Sean, brothers Pat (Dublin) and Cormac (Westport), sisters Evelyn Horan (Partry) and Breege Staunton (Galway), sister-in-law Frances, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and wide circle of friends.

Reposing in Navin's Funeral Home on Friday 21st from 5pm-7pm. Funeral arriving at St. Mary's Church Westport on Saturday 22nd at 12 noon for Funeral Mass at 1pm. Cremation in Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan at 4:30pm.

May she rest in peace.
