Funding is needed to keep post office open

Bonniconlon Post Office is threatened with closure.

A local councillor has called on the government to provide funding to help secure the future of the Bonniconlon Post Office.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Annie-May Reape said the post office is currently financially unsustainable and has called for government intervention to keep it open.

“We don’t want to lose a vital piece of our rural infrastructure. I am calling on the government to make additional funding available for post offices such as this to make it viable and sustainable,” she said.

The post office is currently located in Tuffy’s Gala in the village after the old post office closed its doors in 2010. Cllr Reape said it is a crucial part of community life in Bonniconlon and the surrounding hinterlands.

“The Bonniconlon Post Office covers a huge area from the outskirts of Ballina, into Attymass where there is no post office and across the border into Corbally and Castleconnor. A lot of people would be affected by this if it were to close so we would like to see it get support,” she said.

Cllr Reape added that applications for a new postmaster have been open for a number of weeks and she hopes to see someone take up the role in the near future.
