Warm tributes have been paid in the Ballina Municipal District to former town council foreman Patrick ‘PJ’ McBain.

The funeral of Mr McBain, of Quignalecka, Ballina and Easkey, Co Sligo took place last Wednesday morning at St Muredach’s Cathedral with burial afterwards at Roslea Cemetery, Easkey.

During the Municipal District meeting on Wednesday morning, councillors noted that a number of staff members were absent to attend the funeral of their former colleague, who retired in 2008 after many years of dedicated service to the former Ballina Town Council.

Cllr John O’Hara said he had known PJ McBain for a long time.

“He was a very obliging man, a gentleman. If you wanted to get something done, he’d get it done,” said Cllr O’Hara.

Cllr Annie May Reape said Mr McBain had given great service to Ballina but had a great love for his homeplace of Easkey, Co Sligo.

“He was the most obliging man and was always very active. He was so caring and kind and he loved his Easkey roots," she said.

"I offer my deepest sympathies to his family.”

All other councillors wished to be associated with the words of sympathy and condolence.

On behalf of the staff of the Civic Offices, the head of the district Declan Turnbull offered his condolences to PJ’s family.
