Forkan is unhappy at absence of funding

Cllr Adrian Forkan said he was disappointed that East Mayo received no Active Travel funding

Kiltimagh-based Cllr Adrian Forkan has said he is disappointed that there was no Active Travel funding for the East Mayo region.

Total funding of €4 million was given to Mayo, a reduction in the €4.5 million received by the local authority last year.

The Fianna Fáil representative said it was disappointing there was no Active Travel money to spend in East Mayo and he stressed it was badly needed.

“The N17 road from Sligo to Charlestown is shockingly bad and there has to be some sort of plan,” he added.

Cllr Forkan said other parts of the county had received funding and he recalled how he had seen several accidents on the N17 and investment is needed to boost the local economy and attract investment.

“As a council, we need to keep trying to develop that road,” he said. “Ireland West Airport is key to East Mayo.”

Active Travel funding is primarily provided for greenways and walkways.
