Flynn wants to suspend parking fees in Westport

Cllr Peter Flynn criticised Tuath and highlighted 22 vacant units at Black Oak Rise in Newport

A Westport councillor has called for charges to be suspended in public car parks around the town until such time as they are "made fit for purpose and safe for motorists and pedestrians".

At last week’s Westport Belmullet Municipal District meeting, Cllr Peter Flynn told members: “Car-parks in Westport at the moment are in a deplorable state, with really poor road markings, potholes and dangerous surfaces.

"In the Murrisk car park model at the Reek, we give a portion of the takings towards upkeep of the amenity. I propose we also deduct a percentage of the takings in our local car parks to fund repair works. They need to be safe for people to step out of their cars.

"So I propose we suspend parking charges on our main car parks until such time as we get proper standards ensured on them and that needs to come out of the revenue if we cannot fund it.”
