End of era as Mayo school closes after 177 years

Drummin National School will close its doors after 177 years.

A Mayo primary school is to close marking the end of a 177 year history of education in the area.

Drummin National School, near Westport will close its doors at the end of this month.

Official confirmation has been received from the Department of Education that the West Mayo school will shut at the end of June.

There has been a school in the village since 1849, with the current building dating back to 1936.

“After a lifetime of learning and laughter, Drummin National School will conclude its journey,” said the school in a statement.

The school thanks all those who supported, encouraged and contributed to the life of the school.

“Your kindness, generosity and goodwill have helped create something truly special for the children here, that will continue long after the doors close,” the statement added.

The school will hold a graduation and end-of-year celebration on Wednesday and are also inviting those who have been part of the school’s story to attend afterwards.

“Following this, from 2.30pm onwards, we would be delighted to welcome all those who have been a part of the Drummin National School story over the years to visit for tea and cake.

As this much-loved chapter ends, we take great pride in all that has been achieved here and look forward to seeing the many paths our pupils will follow in the years ahead,” the statement concluded.

Past pupils and members of the community expressed their sadness at the school’s closure on social media.

“177 years of history is truly remarkable, with countless memories, lessons, and achievements - the impact of this school closure will be felt in the community for generations to come,” read a post.

“Our family has been very fortunate to experience at first-hand the wonderful care, kindness and dedication that have always been at the heart of the school. Like so many families across generations, we will always treasure the memories and friendships made there. It is a very sad time for our school community, and we are deeply saddened to experience the loss of our local school,” read another.
