A number of people have sustained serious injuries following the incident with unconfirmed reports of fatalities.
It is understood a car collided with a truck at Castlegar, near Claremorris, around lunchtime today.
The road has been closed to traffic in both directions and local diversions are in place.
Gardaí say the route is expected to remain closed for several hours and have advised motorists to avoid the N17 north of Claremorris if possible this afternoon.
