Embankment works have transformed approach route into Ballina

Enhancement works at the railway embankment by Ballina train station have been completed, transforming a site previously described by councillors as an “eyesore” and a “wasteland”.

The embankment, located along the N26 Dublin Road, had fallen into disrepair, with discarded branches and tree stumps scattered across the site.

Following clearance works that were carried out earlier this year, the area has now been landscaped with a pollinator-friendly wildflower garden, while timber panelling has been stained and installed.

Grass seed and trees have also been planted, helping to stabilise the soil on the slope and reduce erosion.

A maintenance programme has been put in place to manage the wildflower garden, while Mayo County Council will continue to upkeep the embankment in line with sustainable and nature-friendly practices.

Cllr Marie-Thérèse Duffy, who first tabled a motion last November calling for enhancement works along the embankment, welcomed the completion of the project. She thanked the town gardener, outdoor staff in the Ballina Municipal District and council management for their work in improving the site.
