Duffy's SuperValu installs machine for bulk Re-Turn recycling

Joe Duffy was the first to test the new machine.

Duffy’s SuperValu in Ballaghaderreen has launched a bulk Reverse Vending Machine, allowing customers and local clubs and charities to conveniently recycle larger quantities of plastic containers and aluminium cans.

Supported by Re-Turn, the machine will enable customers in the Roscommon, Mayo and Sligo areas to recycle a full bag of containers at once, processing up to 100 containers per minute. Located just off the N5 from Westport to Dublin, the store offers commuters a convenient location to do their recycling. The store has also introduced designated disability parking next to the machine, ensuring all members of the community can access the service with ease.

Duffy’s SuperValu customers have recycled over two million containers since the launch of the Deposit Return Scheme in February 2024, and the installation of a third machine further demonstrates Duffy’s SuperValu’s commitment to sustainability and the local area.

Lorna Duffy, owner of Duffy’s SuperValu Ballaghaderreen, said: “I’m delighted to announce that we have installed our very first high-capacity bulk reverse vending machine, which represents a real win for our community. This machine enables customers to return a larger number of containers in a single visit, making recycling more convenient while promoting sustainable habits.

"The installation marks an important step forward in achieving our sustainability goals, with the capacity to now process over 3.5 million containers annually. What makes this milestone even more meaningful is the benefit it brings to local clubs and charities, who can now return containers at a faster rate, raising much needed funds.”

Ciaran Hope, Chief Operating Officer of Re-Turn, said: “It’s inspiring to see Duffy’s SuperValu Ballaghaderreen taking another step forward in sustainability with the launch of their new bulk reverse vending machine in County Roscommon, and we’re proud to support this initiative. The new machine makes recycling easier for customers across Roscommon and neighbouring Mayo.

"Retailers like Duffy’s SuperValu play a vital role in driving Ireland’s circular economy, and the continued growth of the Deposit Return Scheme highlights the strong commitment of communities and businesses to reducing waste and protecting our environment for future generations.”

As part of a significant investment last year, Duffy’s SuperValu prioritised environmental responsibility through a store revamp. The upgraded store features energy efficient refrigeration, LED lighting, solar panels and an electric vehicle charging point.

Since the launch of the Deposit Return Scheme initiative last year, over 424 million containers have been recycled across 577 SuperValu and Centra stores, making Musgrave the largest retailer participating in the scheme.
