Diversions are proving costly for Mayo motorists
The soaring price of fuel has made the diversions extra costly for motorists.
Ongoing roadworks in Mayo continue to add to journey times for motorists, with a local councillor questioning how much longer the disruption will last, especially as diesel prices have risen above €2 per litre and many commuters are facing lengthy daily diversions.
âRoad users travelling from the Attymass area to Castlebar and Westport are currently subject to long detours due to a number of road closures.
âWorks to facilitate EirGrid’s 110kV project have resulted in the closure of the L1321 Church Road in Attymass, with a diversion in place through the village. Meanwhile, the closure of Straide Bridge for replacement works has resulted in an 11km diversion through Bohola.
âCllr Annie May Reape raised the issue at the September meeting of Ballina Municipal District after a constituent contacted her.
âCllr Reape acknowledged the need for the works to facilitate the 110kV project but noted that the diversion through Attymass village has been in place for a considerable amount of time.
â“A number of people go from Attymass to Castlebar, they meet another obstruction in Straide, and they are diverted again,” she said.
â“The cost of fuel, the length it takes to get from A to B, especially going to Castlebar. How long will it take for the work to be done, for at least the Attymass road to be done?” she asked.
âThe L1321 Church Road in Attymass has been closed since June and is due to remain closed until November 27. Meanwhile, the diversion around Straide will be in place until Friday, December 4.
