Discolouration of water reported in Mayo areas
Uisce Éireann reiterates its public health advice that water is safe to drink when it is running clear.
Uisce Éireann is actively investigating reports of discolouration in the water supply of customers in Westport, Castlebar and surrounding areas.
Pockets of discolouration have been reported following a planned repair to an arterial main from the Lough Mask Water Treatment Plant earlier this week.
These essential repair works necessitated a temporary de-pressurisation of the main, which in turn caused sediment in the main to be dislodged, and this has caused instances of discolouration for some customers on the network in recent days.
Colette Scahill, Uisce Éireann Water Networks Operations Manager for Mayo, assured impacted customers that all efforts are being made to resolve the issue.
“We acknowledge the frustration and concern that can be caused by discolouration. We want to thank impacted customers for their patience, and for reporting the issue. We anticipate that supply will return to normal for all customers on the network in the next 24 hours,” said Colette.
Any customers seeing discoloured water coming from their cold kitchen tap are advised to run the tap for several minutes to restore the clear colour. If the colour does not restore to clear, customers are advised not to drink the water as a precaution, and should contact Uisce Éireann using the contact details below.
