Dementia services to benefit from Memory Walk

The fifth annual Alzheimer’s ‘Memory Walk’ takes place nationwide later this month, with Lough Lannagh the venue for Mayo’s walk on Sunday, September 22.

Mary Rowland from the Alzheimer Society of Ireland's Mayo Centre is urging people throughout the county to register and walk with her at the Castlebar location.

“I along with staff at the Alzheimer Society of Ireland in Castlebar are looking forward once again in joining together with our friends, supporters, service users and families,” said Mary.

“It is an occasion to reconnect with people and walk the scenic Lough Lannagh while also remembering persons with Dementia all over Mayo. We have the unique privilege on this day to inform and remind people of our services here in Mayo which include Castlebar Daycare Service, weekly Dementia inclusive social club and daycare in the home,” she added.

The Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, supported by Payzone, will get underway at 12pm on Sunday, September 22 at the leisure complex in Lough Lannagh, and the Alzheimer Society of Ireland is encouraging everyone to help raise awareness and funds to help those living with dementia. By registering you will receive an Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Participant Pack including a t-shirt and a special pack of Forget Me Not flower seeds to sow at home to help create an annual memory each time the flowers bloom. Adult registration costs €20 and a child’s pack is €5.

Memory Walk honours, remembers, and celebrates the 64,000 people in Ireland living with dementia, along with their families and carers. It also cherishes the memory of those who are no longer with us. Last yeare, 3,500 walkers raised over €120,000 which helped fund vital services for people with dementia, including Daycare, Daycare at Home, Family Carer Training, Social Clubs, Cafés, and a National Helpline.
