Councillors receive update on local area plans

Cllr Al McDonnell praised Mayo County Council's planning section for their co-operation with elected members.
Progress has been made on local area plans for three Mayo towns.
Senior planner with Mayo County Council, John McMyler, informed members of the council's Economic Development, Enterprise Support, Planning and Marine strategic policy committee of the current status of plans in Castlebar, Westport and Ballina.
He said the Castlebar local area plan was adopted by the elected members on November 27, 2023. Subsequently, there was a Draft Ministerial Direction on January 16. There was then a public consultation period of two weeks, and the council received ten submissions. They are currently putting together a report on those submissions which will be sent to the Office of the Planning Regulator (OPR) and the Minister of State with responsibility for Local Government and Planning, Kieran O’Donnell, by March 12.
In Westport, elected members proposed a series of material alterations to their local area plan and they will be published and will go on public display on March 19.
The public consultation period for the Ballina local area plan ended on February 8 and 44 submissions were received. A report on those submissions will be with elected members by March 24.
Cllr Al McDonnell praised Mr McMyler and his office for their cooperation throughout the process.
