Councillors raise Castlebar cemetery issues

Concerns have been raised about the condition of the car park at the new cemetery in Castlebar.
There are calls for Mayo County Council to address issues at the car park of the New Cemetery in Castlebar.
Fine Gael Cllr Ger Deere raised the issue at the monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.
“The state of the car park at the New Cemetery is just terrible,” said Cllr Deere. “It does not set a good example."
Cllr Deere said the deceased and their loved ones deserve better.
“We really need to look at this,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, increased demand for cremations means Castlebar should look to introduce a cremation wall as soon as possible, according to councillors.
Cllr Deere said cremations are becoming a more popular option and he also highlighted the fact that the New Cemetery is starting to fill up.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Blackie Gavin agreed and said a plan for the New Cemetery needs to be put in place before it encroaches further on the footprint of Lough Lannagh.
David Mellett, head of Castlebar Munipal District, told councillors that initial estimates put a cost of €20,000 on a cremation wall.
