Councillor seeks traffic warden at busy school

Mayo County Council need to reinstate a traffic warden outside a busy Westport school "as a matter of urgency".

Cllr Brendan Mulroy made the call at last week’s meeting of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District after discovering there was currently no one fulfilling the role at Scoil Padraig NS on the Newport Road.

“The crossing has become a death trap and there should be no excuse for the lack of a traffic warden there. Kids by their very nature will run across the road.

“There has been a lollipop man or woman there since I was a child and if you look at the colour of my hair, you’ll see that’s a long time ago. I don’t know how the council can take the role away. Something needs to happen right away,” he said.

He asked if the matter was budgetary.

Head of the Municipal District, Séamus Ó Mongáin, said the matter was not budgetary and that they are hoping to get ‘an additional person’ shortly.
