Councillor raises safety concerns over open drain in Ballina estate

Cllr Annie May Reape told the meeting residents are concerned about the open drain at Moyvale
Residents in a Ballina estate have significant concerns about a dangerous open drain.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Annie May Reape told last week's municipal district meeting that householders in Moyvale have regularly been in touch with her regarding the issue.
“I have received lots of emails and correspondence, and they are very disappointed that nothing has happened,” she said. "There is a drain, which is very dangerous, as well as the poor condition of the road. They have asked when these will be completed.”
Cllr Reape sought an update on the situation and said there are also road works on the nearby Sligo Road that residents were not notified about, which are causing a lot of noise.
Senior engineer Orla Bourke said she would make some inquiries and provide an update for residents.
“It is not a simple case of dealing with that," she warned. "We would have to look at it in conjunction with the Office of Public Works (OPW) and then the National Parks and Wildlife. I know there is a strategy and with the flood relief scheme for Ballina, there is a need for open drains to deal with fish life and the rest.”
Ms Bourke said it is complicated and it is not just a matter of filling in the drain, but they would give it attention and she would come back to Cllr Reape.
