A Westport councillor has called on Mayo County Council to ensure that works in Newport are completed as soon as possible.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Brendan Mulroy told a meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District that the works to improve safety for pedestrians on George’s St must be “done and dusted” by the first quarter of 2024.
He said the local action group wrote to elected members to say they were “very happy to see works commence on the right-hand side of George’s St” and they were “delighted to meet with engineers from Mayo County Council”, but they want an update on when the project will be finished.
Mayo Co Council's Head of Roads Paul Dolan said works are due to be completed by late January or early February.
In response, Cllr Mulroy said: "It would need to be done and dusted by then, to be fair. They have given us a bit of leeway on it, and we did tell them in a previous meeting that it would be done by the end of October-November and that hasn’t happened."
The works are seen as key in the town, especially for visitors using the greenway.
