Concerns expressed about old dumping grounds near River Moy

A member of Mayo County Council has raised concerns that old dumping grounds in Foxford are leaching into the River Moy, writes Joan Geraghty. 

Foxford councillor Neil Cruise raised the matter at the February meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District, noting that he was "very concerned" about the issue.

“Traditionally, a lot of these areas were used for dumping and have been left there and now there is a leachate off them," the Fine Gael councillor explained. "I am very concerned about one or two sites where gas and leachate may be going into the Moy River, which is under attack from enough areas.” 

Management of Mayo County Council advised Cllr Cruise that the issue would be referred to the local authority's environment section, which will investigate the areas in question.
