Community gets support for major project in Mayo town

Mayo County Council has said it will assist a local committee in Claremorris in its bid to develop a Community Recreational Centre in the town,
Aontú Cllr Paul Lawless raised a notice of motion at last week’s meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District calling for full support for the proposed project, which he said would be "a great resource" for the town.
In a written reply, area engineer Conrad Harley said the municipal district staff met with the committee recently.
“While the council is not directly involved in any application for funding which may be made, a number of items were discussed including funding options, the next steps involved, the planning process and future consultations," Mr Harley explained. “The municipal district will maintain contact with the committee and will provide any assistance or advice it can to the group.”
Cllr Lawless' motion was seconded by Independent Cllr Richard Finn, who seemed to take exception to the Aontú councillor raising the matter as a notice of motion.
“I don’t need to be asked to support something in my own town. I’m long enough around to know the money and finance for this kind of project does not come from Mayo County Council but we have to provide match funding and if we get a viable project, we will,” he said.
“Claremorris has some of the finest facilities in the county. We don’t have to thank any recent arrivals for these facilities," he said, referring to Cllr Lawless's election to the council for the first time in June.
