Cllr describes 'Fast and Furious' scenes in Castlebar
There is concern over high-speed driving in Castlebar.
Speeding scooters and ‘Fast and Furious’ boy races are causing chaos in Castlebar,
A meeting of Castlebar Municipal District heard concerns about scooters and motorists.
Cllr Michael Kilcoyne called for a report into what the legislation is for tackling the scooter and moped issue in the county town.
Cllr Harry Barrett said he was “almost killed” by one on a Castlebar street.
“I know the Gardaí are responsible for enforcement but it is hard enough to find a Guard on the street in Castlebar,” said Cllr Kilcoyne.
He said elderly people emerging from shops have been struck as well as a number of near-misses.
"A guy whizzes around and just takes her down. It's not good enough," said Cllr Kilcoyne.
He said one incident occurred in close proximity to the Garda station.
"I think this is something very serious. Our turn will come," said Cllr Kilcoyne.
“We will have an accident,” said Cllr Barrett, who added that lime bikes on footpaths are also problematic.
Cllr Barrett said the Pontoon Road area could become the site for the filming of the ‘Fast and the Furious 10', "given the speeding [by cars] that is taking place in the area”. He said speed mitigation measures are needed in the form of raised ramps or pedestrian crossings to stop the speeding coming into town.
“That is an accident blackspot. We have had a death there. We have had serious accidents there. We have to mitigate the speed on that road."
Councillors also highlighted speeding boy racers on the Newport Road, especially at Derrinumera.
