Claremorris road 'in control of Uisce Éireann'

Claremorris road 'in control of Uisce Éireann'

Mayo County Council cannot take into ownershp the road leading to the reservoir in Mayo because it is under the control of Uisce Éireann.

The matter was raised at the recent meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District where John O’Malley described the road as "a gated access", meaning it "does not meet the criteria for taking in charge".

Cllr Richard Finn had asked for the council to take over the road.

“We are told it is not a council road although the council did cut hedges there in the past. There is a gate at the end of the road and local residents have stated they are going to close that gate, which they are quite entitled to do, if Mayo County Council don’t take it over. Up to recently, the council was in charge of the water there, which supplies all local towns and some group water schemes. I cannot understand why that 300m stretch of road can’t be left on the council’s road list.”

Head of the municipal district Padraig Flanagan said the council would have no difficulty taking it over.

“However, it looks like it is now an access road for Uisce Éireann and is in their charge.”
