Children knocked down going to school this morning in Mayo town

A pedestrian crossing has been long-awaited in the village of Bonniconlon

A local councillor has expressed serious concerns after two children were knocked down on their way to school in Crossmolina yesterday.

Cllr Michael Loftus said the youngsters were cycling to school in Gortnor Abbey when they were knocked down while attempting to cross the busy N59 Ballina Road near the Crossmolina Deel Rovers GAA pitch. Fortunately, neither child was injured but the incident reinforces the need for pedestrian safety measures in the town.

“We need a pedestrian crossing at the GAA field and another on the N59 at Gala filling station,” he said.

“There are over 600 children now attending the school and a lot are walking or cycling to school using [this] route.”

Cllr Loftus said he intends to raise this issue at Wednesday's meeting of the Ballina Municipal District.

“I would implore Mayo County Council to see how we can make this location safer for local children to get to and home from school safely before someone is killed.”
