Call for additional parking in Mayo town

Councillors have called for additional parking spaces to be installed and utilised at the back of Tesco, Ballina.

Councillors in Ballina have asked Mayo Co Council to consider using space at the rear of Tesco and to provide extra car parking spaces in light of the reduced car parking spaces in Market Square.

The recently opened Ballina Innovation Quarter has taken away several parking spaces in Market Square, according to Cllr John O’Hara, who said the space available at the rear of Tesco would be ideal for additional parking.

“All this space needs is some maintenance work. It will help bring people into town,” he told a meeting of the Municipal District.

Cllr Mark Duffy said there is a need to improve parking in the town.

“We have businesses opening in different parts of town and we need a better plan to accommodate them in terms of parking."

Seconding the motion, Cllr Michael Loftus said if businesses move into the Innovation Quarter, they will need parking spaces for employees.
