Ballina retailers concerned over lack of parking in Market Square
Cllr Marie-Therese Duffy
A Ballina councillor has asked Mayo Co Council to resolve issues around parking at Market Square in the town.
Cllr Marie Therese Duffy told the June meeting of Ballina Municipal District that several businesses had raised the issue with her.
"There is a shortage of parking spaces on the days when the casual traders are in the Square. These take up so many spaces due to large vehicles sprawling over several spaces. I wonder can they be moved to the plaza space? I have asked before can the parking bylaws be looked into in relation to this also.”
Cllr Annie May Reape agreed, saying: “There is an awful lot of anxiety and annoyance in Market Square with people going around and around until they are dizzy trying to get parking. The whole area is taken up with large vehicles just parking there and they have to be moved.”
Head of Ballina Municipal District Anna Connor said the area is being monitored.
“We will be taking action over spaces they are taking there that they should not be in. We also may extend the bylaws to the public realm area and move them to that spot and therefore free up space in Market Square.”
She asked councillors to bear with the council on the situation and promised to keep them updated with progress reports.
