Ballina councillors pooled funding for road improvement scheme

Cllr Joe Faughnan pushed for the takeover of the road.

Members of Ballina Municipal District have thanked Mayo County Council for taking in charge the Grange Road at Deel Bridge in Crossmolina.

Cllr Joe Faughnan had submitted a motion to last week's meeting of Ballina Municipal District, noting that the bridge and road had undergone improvement works under a Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) in recent weeks. He said Grange Road was a very busy road and local residents were keen to see the council take it over.

Cllr John O’Hara seconded the motion and thanked all councillors for putting their LIS funding into the roadworks.

“This issue is going back at least ten years. Any time there is a section of road like this in the middle of a council road, it tends to cause a lot of problems trying to get these stretches covered. We only got a bit of LIS money this year and we put it all into it. It is a job well done and I think the people out there will be delighted.”

Cllr Annie May Reape congratulated Cllr Faughnan on pushing for the takeover, adding: “This was one area where councillors put all of their money in to get the work done and that has to be acknowledged.”

Area Engineer Orla Bourke agreed and said the joint funding by councillors “is an example to the county of how good collaboration can lead to an excellent outcome".

"Deel Bridge is beautiful now and thanks to you all we have had the opportunity to fix the road and take it in charge for the community. Well done.”
