Ballina Christmas parking plans unveiled

There will be free afternoon parking in Ballina car parks this Christmas

There will be free parking in the afternoon in all car parks in Ballina this Christmas.

Councillors approved the plan at last week’s municipal meeting. It will see parking free from 2pm onwards in all Ballina car parks from December 1 to December 29.

It marks a continuation of the plan implemented during last year’s Christmas period.

Head of the municipal district Declan Turnbull said motorists should be aware that this applies only to car parks and not on-street parking in Ballina, while Cllr Annie-May Reape said that sufficient signage needs to be put in place to inform drivers of these parking arrangements.

Meanwhile, senior engineer Orla Bourke said the e-parking scheme in Ballina is proving to be a success.

Introduced in August 2021, it has doubled its income in 2023 and she said it has great scope to be extended to additional users.

“It is very convenient, removing the need for paper tickets, and has huge potential for further uptake,” she said.

She said it was great to see that council staff and councillors Jarlath Munnelly and Annie-May Reape had signed up as users of the e-parking service.

“That is a breach of GDPR,” joked Cllr Munnelly.
