The Lawyers Fishing Club of Ireland enjoyed their annual event at Lough Conn during the summer. The group of approximately 40 solicitors and barristers, mainly from Ireland and the United Kingdom, based themselves in Foxford and enjoyed several days of angling and local hospitality.

The club previously came to County Mayo in years gone by and stayed at Enniscoe House and the Downhill Hotel (as it was then) in the 1990s. They later moved to the Pontoon Bridge Hotel as their base on a number of occasions in the 2000s. The Lawyers Fishing Club visit a different lake each year and over the past decade have focused their fishing on Loughs Corrib, Mask, Sheelin, Arrow and Erne.

However, organiser and local solicitor John Geary was keen to bring the group back to his native area and take advantage of the great fishing on offer on Lough Conn. They based themselves at the Moy Hotel on Main Street in Foxford for the annual gathering with many of the group staying in the area’s guesthouses and Airbnbs such was the demand.

Local anglers from around the lake took the visiting lawyers out fishing, with some of the visitors making the journey from the Northern Ireland, England, and as far away as Chile.

“Foxford was an ideal base for the group," explained John Geary. "The welcome shown to them by the Noone family and staff at the Moy Hotel was top class and the food each evening was superb. Particular thanks to Mary Geary, Pat Gannon, Pat Guiry, the Foxford Lodge, Neil Cruise, Gerry Quinn, Chris Kelly and Jordan’s Bar for their hospitality to the group.

“Whilst the annual event for the lawyers is all about friendship and fishing, there were a number of angling prizes which were sponsored by Jon Binley, Tiernan Brothers Angling Centre and Harry Feeney, so a big thank you to them” John added.

John confirmed to the Western People that such was the success of the event that the group have requested to return to Foxford again next year and dates have been already booked for 2026.
