On the night of Sunday, August 13 in the Cathedral of Christ the King in Mullingar, the Piper’s Cross Céilí Band were crowned the All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band Champions for 2023.

This was a historical achievement as the band became the very first Mayo band to claim the title since the first All-Ireland Fleadh in 1951. The band were honoured to lift the Dal gCais trophy as well as the Kitty Linnane Memorial Cup and take it home to Mayo to make history.

The band members are; Davog Frayne (Knock), Edel Walsh (Tooreen), Caoimhe and Cian Kilkenny (Belcarra), Eoghan and Aodhán Hughes (Carnacon), Eoin Walsh (Ballinrobe), Paul Clesham (Roundfort), Conor Maheady (Killala), Ryan Maguire (Fermanagh), Cian MacNamara (Achill) and Michael Lavelle (Achill).

The band intertwine music, song and dance together in their performances, creating an exceptional and varied display of entertainment. They will also be recording a CD early in the new year with recording artist Tommy Doherty from Foxford, who also provided mentorship to the band throughout the year.

The band gave an electrifying performance on the night of the All-Ireland in August and were especially commended for their uplifting energy in their interpretations of traditional dance tunes which strongly reflects the great set dancing tradition in Mayo. The Piper’s Cross Céilí band are extremely proud to represent Mayo and to preserve and promote the rich and vibrant traditions of music, song and dance from Co. Mayo.

They will perform in a concert at the TF Royal Theatre on Friday, December 8 at 8pm.

They will be supported on the night by the Rolling Waves grúpaí cheoil from Castlebar and featuring singers Cian McNamara and Carol Freeley.
