Local councillors have said action is needed at a dangerous junction in South Mayo

Local councillors have said action is needed at a dangerous junction in South Mayo, writes Paul O’Malley.

Cllr Patsy O’Brien told last week’s meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District that he had been contacted by residents living near the Cahernablaughy junction on the Ballinrobe-Kilmaine road.

He said work was needed on the Kilmaine side of the junction in particular and called for Mayo County Council to raise the issue with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

“When you come out onto this road, cars are already on you,” he said.

Cllr Damien Ryan supported the call and said the road should be adjusted to give more visibility and vision to motorists.

The council’s senior engineer John O’Malley said a request had been made to his colleagues in the roads office to carry out a Safety Audit at this location and this may lead to low-cost safety improvements works.
