Merry Monk retain basketball league title with win over rivals

Team Merry Monk Ballina have successfully retained their LLR League title after beating Mayo Meteors 99-75 last Saturday in the De La Salle Hall, Castlebar.

The game, originally scheduled for last Bank Holiday Monday but was postponed, saw little to separate the two in the opening two quarters as Merry Monk took a 44-33 lead into half-time.

Meteors responded well in the third but made little inroads into the Merry Monk lead, winning the quarter 23-22 but still trailing by ten points.

The final period would see Merry Monk show their class, with captain Ronan McGarrity putting on an exhibition of shooting as he finished with an overall tally of 39 points – 28 in the second half alone – as Merry Monk ran out 24-point winners.
