Mayo county councillor Patsy O'Brien has officially announced he will stand in the upcoming General Election as an Independent candidate.

The Hollymount man topped the polls in the Claremorris area when he was re-elected to Mayo County Council in June.

Cllr O'Brien said he has been "inundated with requests" to contest the General Election and is looking forward to the challenge.

O'brien had been hotly tipped as a potential candiate will aim to take a spot in the five-seat constituency.
