Mayo Community Games county finals showcase young talent

Athletics: More than 550 young athletes representing 25 Community Games areas, from the four corners of the County, gathered in Claremorris on June 14 last for the Mayo Community Games Athletics County Finals, enjoying a day of competition, achievement, and great community spirit.

Long-time organisers Geraldine Joyce and Sue-Ellen Griffith once again led the coordination of the event. They were ably supported by the Mayo Community Games committee and almost 40 volunteers who carried out a range of roles, including registration, officiating, measuring, and marshalling, ensuring another successful and well-run county finals.

Proceedings began with a minute's silence in memory of the late Berni Kilboyle of the Carra Area. The respect shown by all present reflected the high regard in which she was held throughout the Community Games in Mayo. Sheila Duggan from Claremorris commenced proceedings with a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem. The opening ceremony featured Ruth Donnelly from Carra and Isabelle Orme from Moygawagh, who delivered the Community Games Pledge in Irish and English.

A special word of thanks to Portwest and St Colman's Credit Union, who this year joined Mayo Community Games as medal and shield sponsors. Their generous support funded shields for all team events and medals across the various disciplines, providing valuable backing for activities throughout the year.

Congratulations to all competitors, and best wishes to those who will now go on to represent Mayo at the Regional finals in Athlone on July 18 and National Community Games Finals in Carlow on August 22/23.
