The bitterly cold Arctic airmass that has been affecting the country for several days will start to move away, with milder conditions developing later in the weekend.

Snowfall is possible this evening and overnight, alongside poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions

The cold snap is expected to continue with temperatures dropping as low as minus 5C in some areas.

Temperatures are forecast to drop further to -4c in parts.

Drivers and other road users are being warned of hazardous travelling conditions during Monday's early rush hour

The change in the weather pattern will mean cold, clear and generally calm conditions with little rain.

Met Éireann said a brief return to slightly milder conditions would make way for a widespread chilly spell.
