In a judgment in April, Judge David Nolan said he had “serious doubts” as to whether the commission had the expertise to deal with “important issues” raised by Rogers’s case.

A letter signed by representatives of 30 local community, business and tourism interests, residents groups and sporting organisations in the Co Meath village, has been given to John Rogers, the former attorney general and local businessman who lives in Crewbane, Slane, pleading with him to withdraw the case.

A woman in her 30s died in the collision between a lorry and a car on the N2 at Castleblayney on Thursday morning at around 8am.

Her body was removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, for a post-mortem.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 30s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
