Learner drivers are being "unfairly hindered" by the RSA’s inability to reduce driving test wait times, a Fine Gael TD has said

Last month, The Irish Times reported 68,000 learner drivers were waiting to sit their driving test – with some facing waits of seven-and-a-half months.

Drivers should have to resit a theory test every time their licence is up for renewal, a Labour TD has said.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) said there had been around 170 complaints each month in 2024 but that these made up less than one per cent of the total tests conducted.

The two accused were part of a group of five individuals involved in a scheme to take driver theory tests on behalf of third parties

Throughout last year, there were 46 cases where a person was involved in a crash during their driving test.

The RSA said that in the period since 2021, there had been six cases where there was a “query about the candidate’s identity” and a test did not go ahead as planned.
