Von der Leyen said she deeply regretted the move and warned of "immense consequences" for the global economy, including vulnerable countries facing some of the highest US tariffs.

“Tariffs are bad for consumers in Ireland, they’re bad for consumers in Europe, and they’re bad for consumers in the United States of America," Harris said.

Mr Harris, who is also Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, said the call was an important opportunity to hear EU plans on countermeasures to respond to US tariffs on EU steel and aluminium.
