Carol is mourned in Kiltimagh

The death of Carol Roache (nee Shannon), Aiden Street, Kiltimagh, which took place peacefully in the loving care of Mayo Hospice after a long illness bravely borne was greeted with a deep sense of sadness by all who had the pleasure of knowing her over the years. Just 59 years of age at the time of her death, the young Carol met her Australian husband to be Mike Roache when he arrived in Kiltimagh and booked into Shannon’s B&B. It was love at first sight and eventually the happy couple married and made Australia their home for a time before returning to live in Aiden St where they brought up their young family. Carol was a warm hearted and kind person who always had time to help those in need and so it was always her dream to train as a nurse. This she did and spent the rest of her days as a dedicated staff nurse of the Mayo Mental Health Services before illness struck.

She was also very involved in local events, always ready to help out in whatever way she could. She had a special love of the GAA and was a great supporter of all the Mayo teams and, of course her local GAA Club. She was a familiar face on the sideline at the games and was very proud of her sons Dylan and Jack when they played, always there to support them be it the GAA or Kiltimagh Knock United.

She had lots of friends with whom she kept in contact since her school days, all of whom were devastated when they heard of her untimely death and who came to Kiltimagh to say their final goodbyes to a dear friend.

Predeceased by her father PJ, Carol will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by her devoted husband Mike, sons Jack and Dylan, her daughter Sinead and stepdaughter Megan, her mother Nancy, brothers John, Paul, Declan and Enda, her sister Denise, sisters-in-law Marion, Aileen and Carmel, brother-in-law Gavin, her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law in Australia, nieces, nephews and grandnephew, Godmother Peggy Conroy, aunts, uncles, cousins and relatives and a wide circle of friends.

Carol reposed at her home in Aiden Street on Friday, February 23, where large crowds came to pay their respects as they did again the following day when her funeral cortege made its way to the Church of the Holy Family for her Funeral Mass. Afterwards Carol was laid to rest in Kilkinure Cemetery.

May her gentle soul now rest in peace.

Kiltimagh Knock United AGM

The role of volunteers in the day to day running of Kiltimagh Knock United was emphasised by chairman Martin Canny at the club's annual general meeting. The club has over 400 members, children and adults, with every single bit of football catered for by volunteers, and he wanted to acknowledge the fantastic work they do.

'Jobs' undertaken by volunteers are vast, from coaching to advertising the new season and taking registration, having footballs and kit ready, selling 50/50 tickets and fundraising, serving on the committee, and the list goes on. “Without our volunteers, there is no club,” he said.

One area in particular where the club needs help is in the sale of 50/50 tickets. This is the main source of regular income and everyone - members, parents, family members and supporters - is urged to come on board and join the rota; 4 or 5 Sundays in the year is the commitment. Get in touch with Martin or any committee member to discuss how you can help. The funds raised through the weekly draw are vital to ensure the club develops as membership continues to grow.

Development works at the grounds are ongoing, from drainage to the recent installation of three phase power and undergrounding cables, with hopes for sports capital funding this year to complete a third pitch. The grounds staff ensure the club has possibly the best pitches in the county, and they were thanked for their care and high standard of work.

The club also achieved the FAI Clubmark Award in 2023, a symbol that it is well ran and a safe place to send your children.

Another huge positive at Cloonlee is the Western Care service users and staff, based at The Hub in the KK clubhouse, who continue to greatly enhance the club with their great work, from a recent fabulous kitchen upgrade to the new polytunnel, which will be a hive of activity.

Sponsorship is critical for the club's day to day activities and long-term development and Martin paid tribute to Frank Salmon of CMS who has been main sponsor since Kiltimagh Knock United was established 22 years ago. Similar to Frank's business, the club is still growing and expanding, he said, and he thanked him for putting his faith in the club and for his continued support.

Another local who hasn't forgotten his roots is Village Inn owner and former KK star John Mountney, Bohola, captain of Dundalk, who was thanked for his senior team sponsorship, which continues this year.

The AGM saw Martin Canny completing his five-year term as chairman of Kiltimagh Knock United, as he steps back from the position at the helm of the club.

Martin has been involved at pretty much every level of KK for the past 15 years and said it had been an 'honour and a privilege' to lead the club as chair for the past five years. He'll still be busy, though, coaching with the youngest and oldest teams in the club.

Club secretary Mary Niland gave a comprehensive report on activities and successes across all ages, from underage to senior men's and women's, with more than 20 teams fielding. The year's accounts were also circulated, showing prudent management of club finances as costs increase in a number of areas. Mary also paid tribute to Martin for his work on behalf of the club membership and for his support and guidance as head of the committee for the past five years. A token of appreciation was presented to Martin by child protection officer Natalie Gill. The meeting welcomed three new members to the committee - Michael Ivers, Chris Jennings and Sean Weldon.
