Congratulations Eoghan

Congratulations to Eóghan Lavin who is embarking on an exciting professional boxing career. Eóghan will be promoted by Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren of Queensberry Promotions live on TNT Sports, managed by one of the biggest names to ever lace up boxing gloves two-time Heavyweight World Champion Anthony Joshua and his management team along with David McGinley Sport. Eóghan will train in Manchester with boxing royalty Former World Champion Anthony Crolla. Eóghan is wished every success for the future.

Lotto

The numbers drawn in the Swinford Community Lotto draw held on January 24, were 14, 18, 19 and 27. There was no jackpot winner. €70 vouchers were won by James Fahey, c/o Corrib Oil and Anor, c/o Horkan’s. The jackpot is now €10,200.

GAA 50/50 draw

Congratulations to John Maloney who was last week’s winner of the Swinford GAA 50/50 draw held in Horkan’s. Entries are available through SwinfordGAA.ie, Foireann, Clubspot and throughout town.

ALONE

ALONE is looking for volunteers in Swinford, Foxford, and surrounding areas to visit older people in the community for one hour per week. Ceol an Gheimhridh

Congratulations to the organisers and participants in the revived Ceol an Gheimhridh hosted by Swinford Comhaltas over the weekend of January 19. Séisiun ceoil, Cúpan agus Comhrá along with competitions in music, song, dance, story telling and recitation were enjoyed over the course of the three days.

KCC 50/50 draw

Congratulations to Ann Nash who was the winner of the December Killasser Community Centre 50/50 draw winning €1,000. €20 spot prize winners were Eugene Hussey and Kaz Szatkowski. The January 2024 draw will be held on Saturday, February 3.

Vision Ireland

Vision Ireland Swinford, previously known as NCBI, is seeking volunteers to assist in the store. The store is also accepting donations of ladies’ and men’s clothing, ladies’ and men’s shoes, handbags/purses, and homeware (curtains, delph, glassware, etc.). To mark St. Valentine’s Day, Bishop Paul Dempsey will lead a Service of Blessing for engaged couples and those marking significant anniversaries during 2024 in the Cathedral in Ballaghaderreen on Sunday, February 18, at 4pm. Bingo

Social Bingo will be held on Monday night in The Sheridan Memorial Community Centre, Bohola. Doors open at 8pm for an 8.30 start. Community fun and a cup of tea is included.

Bohola Failte Weekend

Bohola Failte Weekend will be held from February 2 to February 4. On Friday 2nd there will be dancing in The Park Hotel with the White Diamond Band followed by a disco with DJ Michael Burke. Admission is €15, and doors open at 9pm.

On Saturday, Mass will be held at 7pm in Bohola Church followed by music with Tommy Maloney in The Village Inn. Sunday will be family friendly with activities at 1pm. There will be music in McDonaghs bar at 9pm. Looking forward to a great weekend of fun and entertainment.

The late Helen Davern

There was great sadness and shock when news of the death of Helen Davern, Lavey More, Charlestown, and formerly of Cloonmore, Carracastle, filtered through the local community last week. Helen nee Callaghan, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar, on January 15. Helen was pre-deceased by her parents Marian and Hugh and is survived by her heartbroken family, her husband Mark, son Seán, daughters Aoife and Órla, grandson Ryan, sisters Bridget and Margaret, brother John, mother-in-law Áine, son-in-law Alex, daughter-in-law Paula, Órla’s partner Máirtín, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncle, cousins, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

Helen reposed in The Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen, on Thursday, January 18, with removal from her home on Friday, January 19, to St James’ Church, Carracastle, via Cloonmore, arriving for Mass of the Resurrection at 11am, followed by committal service in Lakelands Crematorium. May Helen rest in peace.

Widespread disruption to power supplies

The arrival of storm Isha saw many homes in the parish being left without electricity. Many of the older people returned briefly to the times before rural electrification where life was very labour laden and laborious. Thankfully it was short lived and almost all homes are now reconnected to the power supply.

Heritage Night change of date

Heritage nights will now be held on the second Monday night of the month and the next heritage night will be February 12, at 8.30pm. Everyone is welcome.

The late Tom Flannery

The death took place of Tom Flannery, Bockagh, Ballaghaderreen, on January 16, unexpectedly but peacefully in the exceptional care of the staff and management of the intensive care unit of Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar, surrounded by his family. Tom was predeceased by his parents Paddy and Katie, and is survived by his heartbroken family, his wife Mary, his sons Patrick, Peter, Thomas and daughter Ann Marie, daughters-in-law Áine and Olivia, grandchildren Oisín and Éabha, sisters Eileen, Kathleen and Una, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

Tom reposed in The Kilgarriff Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen, on Thursday, January 18, and his funeral arrived to the Cathedral of the Annunciation and St Nathy, Ballaghaderreen, on Friday, January 19, for Mass of the Resurrection at 12 noon followed by interment in Kilcolman Cemetery. May Tom rest in peace sincere sympathy is offered to all who are bereaved.

The late David Canacott

The death took place suddenly on January 14 of David Canacott, Castleknock, Dublin. He was son of John, late of Kilfree, Gurteen. Sincere sympathy is extended to John, his mother Frances, sisters Laura, Louise, and Sarah and brother Matthew. May his soul rest in peace.

The late Fr John McKeon

The death took place on January 17 of Fr John McKeon, Boyle, and the Diocese of Brentwood, Essex. He was an uncle of Liz Flanagan, Lismerane, Killaraght. Sincere sympathy to Liz and to his sisters and brothers and their families. May he rest in peace.

The late Joe McWeeney

The death took place at Sligo University Hospital on January 18, of Joe McWeeney, Moygara, Gurteen. He was a native of Killavoggy, Dromahair, and he and his wife Peggy came to live at Moygara over thirty years ago and soon became part of the community.

Joe was a great conversationalist and enjoyed the chat with neighbours and friends. One of the senior members of the community he will be sadly missed. His remains reposed at O'Dowds Funeral Home, Gurteen, on Saturday evening and were removed to St Patrick's Church on Sunday for Mass of the Resurrection celebrated by Fr Joe Caulfield PP, with burial afterwards in Gurteen Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Peggy, sons Sean, Dean and Adrian, daughter Anthea and their families. May he rest in peace.

Eastern Harps 50/50

Eastern Harps 50/50 draw on January 22, had a jackpot of €568 and the winner was Kevin Casey, Culfadda. The club is very appreciative of all the support throughout the year.

Gurteen Celtic lotto

The numbers drawn in the Gurteen Celtic lotto held last week were; 01, 21, 25, and 28. Sean Hunt, Kilshalvey won the €50. The latest lotto was held in O'Dowds and the jackpot was €7,600.

Lecture
