Swinford Golf Club achieves Gold Standard in Women in Golf Charter

Swinford Golf Club has been awarded the Gold Standard in the Women in Golf Charter by Golf Ireland, a recognition of the commitment to promoting gender inclusivity and balance in golf. This accolade underscores the efforts towards creating an environment that values and nurtures the participation of women and girls in golf. It affirms the dedication to the principles of inclusivity, participation, and equal opportunities within Swinford Golf Club and the broader golfing community.

Church gate collection

There will be a church gate collection in aid of Swinford Agricultural Show on the weekend of April 27 and 28. All support will be greatly appreciated.

Lotto

The numbers drawn in the Swinford Community Lotto held on April 15, were: 3, 8, 18 and 30. €70 vouchers were won by PJ McManus, Carracannada and Mary Knight, Straide; €35 was won by Jessie Kavanagh, Carracanada, Sarah Barry, Tullinaho, John Lynskey, Newpark and David Basquill, Lisheenabrone. The latest jackpot was €12,600.

Rules Night

A special club rules night will be held at Swinford Golf Club on April 24 at 7.30pm, featuring Golf Ireland Rules Officials Nicky McLoughlin and Shena Feehily. This event is a fantastic opportunity for all members to deepen their understanding of golf rules and enhance their playing experience. Nicky and Shena will share their expertise and answer any questions you may have about the rules of golf. Whether you are a seasoned player or new to the game, this session is designed to benefit everyone.

KCC 50/50 draw

Congratulations to Gabriel Howley who won €605 in the March Killasser Community Centre 50/50 draw. Brid and Tony Peyton and Eoin Rowley (Ballinacurra) each won a €20 spot prize. The next draw takes place on Saturday, May 4.

Sympathy

Junior Golf

Swinford Golf Club is excited to launch their Junior Golf Program, an initiative aimed at introducing golf to U15s in a fun and friendly environment. The program kicks off with an information afternoon at the clubhouse on April 27, from 2 to 4 pm, offering families an overview of the activities and opportunities available.

Following the kickoff event weekly golf lessons will commence starting May 4, taking place every Saturday afternoon. These sessions are open to all levels, from novices to those with a budding interest in golf, ensuring that every child can find their swing.

The Junior Golf Program, run by dedicated volunteers, is focused on teaching the fundamentals of the game while emphasizing sportsmanship, respect, and teamwork. It is a perfect way to introduce youngsters to a sport that promotes physical health and social interaction.

Swinford AC Spring 5k Series

The Swinford AC Spring 5k Series continues every Wednesday until May 8 as follows - April 24 Midfield, May 1 Foxford and May 8 Kiltimagh. Registration from 7pm each night with a start time of 7.30pm. €5 entry fee. For more information contact Adette 087 2362112 or Micheal 086 8196511.

Swinford Gardening Club

Horticulturist Miriam McDermott will give a talk on 'planting vegetables, flowers and containers for Summer' at 8pm on Tuesday, April 23, in the Meeting Room on Lower Main Street. She will also be happy to answer questions from the audience. All are welcome to attend. Talks are free to members. Non-members €5.

Gardening Club outing

A Gardening Club outing will take place to Athenry and Portumna on Saturday, May 11. There will be guided tours of Portumna Castle and Gardens and Portumna Workhouse along with a visit to Athenry Heritage Centre. The cost is €80 for club members and €85 for non-members. The price includes entrance fees and guided tours. Breakfast and dinner are also included. Departure at 8.30am.

Midfield Co-Operative Society Group Water Scheme Limited are holding their 2023 Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at 9pm, in Julian's of Midfield, and all members are welcome to attend.

Wedding Bells

Congratulations to Elaine Waldron, Urlaur and Adrian Tynan who were married on Friday, April 12, in Urlaur Church. They are both wished health and happiness into the future.

Parent and Toddler Group

Kilmovee Parent and Toddler Group meets each Tuesday from 10-12pm in Kilmovee Community Centre. All parents, grandparents, carers and toddlers are welcome to attend for a chat, play and coffee. It is a great way to meet new people and socialise for both parents and children.

The late Peter Halligan

The death took place of Peter Halligan, Bradford and formerly of Barnalyra, Charlestown, peacefully in Bradford. He was predeceased by his parents Hugh and Catherine Halligan nee Leach (Carn, Charlestown), and is the much loved father of Martin and also a beloved grandad.

Peter reposed in the Horkan Funeral Home, Charlestown, on Thursday, April 18, from 6pm until 7.30pm. His funeral arrived to Bushfield cemetery on Friday, April 19, for prayers and interment at 12 noon. Deepest sympathy is offered to all who are bereaved by his passing. May Peter rest in peace.

The late Geraldine Mitchell nee Surlis

The death took place on April 12 at Oakwood Nursing Home, Ballaghaderreen, of Geraldine Mitchell nee Surlis, Frenchpark, and late of Shroofe, Monasteraden. News of her passing was received with great sadness in her native area and beyond. She was predeceased by her parents John and Ena and she will be sadly missed by her husband John, sons Joseph and Christopher, brothers Terence and John and their families, aunt Sr Phyllis, nephew and niece, extended family and many friends to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated in St Nathy's Cathedral, Ballaghaderreen, on Monday with the funeral proceeding to Lakelands Crematorium. May she rest in peace.

The late Sr Una Giblin

The death took place on April 7 of Sister Una Giblin, Marist Convent, Carrick-on-Shannon, and formerly of Charlestown. She was sister of the late Fr Micheál Giblin, who was a curate in Gurteen parish in the late seventies. May she rest in peace.

Baptism

Welcomed in the Sacrament on Saturday last in St Patrick's Church, Gurteen, was Orla Patricia McCormack, daughter of Tara nee Murray and Aiden. She is sister to Joey and Naoise.

Eastern Harps 50/50

Eastern Harps 50/50 draw on April 15 had a jackpot of €689 and the winner was James Woods.

Gurteen Celtic

The Gurteen Celtic lotto draw last week was not won and the numbers drawn were: 8, 11, 14, 27. Winner of the €50 was Mary Hannon, Battlefield, Culfadda. The jackpot is now €3,300 and the draw for April 21 will be taking place in O'Dowds, Lake View Bar, Monasteraden.

Concert

There will be a concert in the Coleman Music Centre, Gurteen on this Saturday, April 27, at 8pm featuring David Munnelly (accordion) and Mick Conneely (fiddle), joined by special guest singer Caitríona Ní Cheannabháin. There will also be a concert on Saturday, May 4, at 8pm, featuring Donal Clancy, Brian McGrath and Damien Quinn. Donal is son of the legendary Liam Clancy of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. After two very successful walks the past two years, the local committee are very proud to announce that this year Straide is an Official Darkness into Light Walk for 2024 which takes place on Saturday, May 11. Martin Sheridan Bursary Awards Scheme

The 2024 Western People Martin Sheridan Bursary Awards Scheme is now open for applications. There is €5,000 in funds available to support athletes from Co. Mayo. Recent Deaths

The death occurred of Micksey Clarke, Bohola, who died on Saturday, April 13, and whose funeral took place in Bohola on Monday 15. He was father of Pat, Brendan, Susan and Caroline; Annemarie Byrne-Cunningham, Breaffy and late of Carrowkeel, died on Tuesday, April 16 and her funeral took place on Saturday 20, in Castlebar with burial afterwards in Breaffy Cemetery. She was the daughter of Maureen Byrne, Carrowkeel, and sister to Imelda, Thomas, Paul, Philip and John. Sincere sympathy is extended to all the bereaved.

Western People Women’s Mini Marathon

The Mayo.ie Western People Women's Mini Marathon (10km) takes place in Ballina on Sunday, May 5, at noon. Runners, joggers and walkers all welcome to join the fun. Registration: www.westofirelandwomensminimarathon.com.
