Local Notes: Successful fundraiser by Ballina group

Mayo Mental Health Association (MMHA) has thanked Youthreach Ballina for its recent contribution. The members of Youthreach Ballina raised the money as part of their General Education Task.

MMHA has also thanked the facilitator of Youthreach Ballina, music teacher Dennis McCalmont.

Youthreach Ballina is an education, training and work programme for early school leavers aged from 15 to 20 years of age, located at Cathedral Road, Ballina. 

It is a programme run by Mayo Sligo Leitrim Education and Training Board.

Pioneer Dinner Dance tickets available 

Tickets for the forthcoming Mid-Killala Regional Pioneer Dinner Dance are now available from local organisation members Liam Henry and Maureen Egan (both Ballina).

The event takes place in Hiney’s Upper Deck, Crossmolina on Friday, February 2, with live music from Michael S and Clodagh Togher.

Tickets can also be had from Phyllis McLoughlin (Ardagh), Tom Roche (Cooneal), Martina Gardiner, (Knockmore) and Una Birrane, (Moygownagh).

The late Cyril Davey 

The death has taken place of Cyril Davey, Belleek Lodge, Ballina and formerly of Carraroe, Co Sligo.

Cyril is deeply mourned by his brother Bertie, sisters-in-law Patricia, Deirdre and Noreen, nieces, nephews, Bernadette's family - Mary, Helen, Ann, Lily, Kathleen, Ita and Jacqueline and their husbands and families, and all of Cyril's relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Bernadette Durkan Davey, parents Peter and Christina, brothers Joe, John, Peter and Al, sisters Rita Devaney and Bridie Harte, nephews Joe and Gerard, and niece Frances.

Cyril reposed at Hiney's Funeral Home, Crossmolina on Sunday of last week. Funeral Mass was held in St Muredach's Cathedral, Ballina on Monday, followed by burial in Crossmolina Cemetery.

Salmon angling season opens 

The 2024 salmon angling season gets going this Thursday, February 1. Ballina Salmon Anglers Association now has tickets available for fishing. Contact Francis Gorman on 086-8752400 or Peter McHugh on 087-9922200 for more details.

Volunteers Co-ordinator required 

Mayo Volunteer Centre, Cathedral Road, Ballina is seeking a Community Volunteers Co-ordinator.

Candidates must have experience of managing projects, along with strong IT and administration skills. A full, clean driving licence is also required, as well as an ability to work co-operatively as part of a team.

This is a paid, part-time role, working 19 hours per week.

The late Annie Traynor 

 The death has taken place in her 92nd year of Annie Traynor (née Murphy), Manchester and formerly of Knockfree, Cloghans, Ballina.

Annie will be sadly missed by her family Jim, Bernard, Martin, John, Kevin, Maureen, Peter and Paul, her brother Martin John Murphy (Knockfree), sisters-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and the extended Murphy and Traynor families.

She was predeceased by her husband Paddy, Knockfree, and her brothers Jimmy and Paddy.

Annie reposed at Hiney’s Funeral Home, Crossmolina on Wednesday last, followed by removal to St Teresa’s Church, Rathduff, Ballina.

Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, with burial afterwards in Ballinahaglish Cemetery.

Money raised for search and rescue group 

River Moy Search and Rescue has thanked Ward Pharmacy, Ballina for raising €200 in their Christmas raffle for the River Moy Search and Rescue. The Ballina-based search and recovery organisation is grateful in particular to the customers of the Pearse Street pharmacy.

The late Pat McCarthy 

The death has taken place of Pat McCarthy, Rathmeel Lawns, Ballina and formerly of Kenmare, Co. Kerry.

Pat was a well-known and highly respected chef in the Ballina area over many decades.

Pat was the beloved husband of Betty and loving father of Paul, Ross, Jonathon, Kelley and Niamh. He will be sadly missed by his wife, sons, daughters, sons-in-law David Treacy and Adam Ellwood, Paul’s partner Daniella, Ross’s partner Georgina, beloved grandchildren Donnacha, Cormac, Karen, Aoife, Aedan and Lottie, brother John (Kerry), sisters Peg O’Sullivan and Joan O’Brien (both Kerry), sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

He was the beloved son of the late Paddy and Mary (Kerry) and brother of the late Bill and Mary.

Pat reposed at McGowan's Funeral Home, Ballina on Tuesday of last week. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated in St Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina on Wednesday followed by burial in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina.

New appointments at Order of Malta 

Ballina Order of Malta Ireland Ambulance Corps is made up of loyal and dedicated members who voluntarily serve in an organisation that has assisted the people of this region for over eight decades, providing first aid and ambulance cover to the community.

Recently, five prominent members of the group have taken on new positions at national and regional levels. Commander Bernard Guthrie has been appointed Deputy National Director, Dr Lisa Cunningham-Guthrie has been appointed Chief Medical Officer to the Ambulance Corps, Commander Robbie Cawley has been appointed Assistant National Director with responsibility for Training, and Lieutenant Sean Doherty has been appointed Regional Director to the merged west and north western regions.

Lieutenant David Beattie has been appointed to the training team at Ballina Order of Malta.

St Brigid’s Crosses available

Thursday, February 1, is St Brigid’s Day, but was originally associated with the ancient pagan festival of Imbolc that traditionally marked the lambing season and the beginning of spring in Ireland.

The late Phyllis Loftus 

The death has taken place of Phyllis Loftus (née Walsh), Cloontia, Bonniconlon, Ballina.

Phyllis is deeply mourned by her loving sons Pat, Derek and Kevin, daughters Teresa, Helen and Nicola, sisters and brothers, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Johnny, parents William and Mary-Ellen, and brothers Billy and Mike.

Phyllis reposed at Gallagher's Funeral Home, Bonniconlon on Tuesday of last week, followed by removal to the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Bonniconlon.

Requiem Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, with burial afterwards in Bonniconlon Cemetery.

Busy year ahead for Ballina Sports Centre 

Since 1991, Ballina Community Sports Centre has been a vibrant and busy facility, and the amenity continues to host a variety of regular activities from basketball and badminton, to dancing and fitness classes.

The not-for-profit organisation offers a wide range of sport and other recreational learning sessions at its Cathedral Road building. It provides a key resource in Ballina that is socially inclusive and affordable and addresses the health and leisure needs of the local community through the provision of top-class facilities and expert fitness advice.

The centre is managed by local man Brendan Doyle.

Volunteer wanted for Meals on Wheels

Ballina Meals on Wheels is looking for a Kitchen Assistant to join its volunteer team in the Ballina Community Centre. The Kitchen Assistant will be asked to assist in the preparation and packing of meals, and carry out cleaning and tidying of the kitchen and food preparation area.

Volunteer shifts are three hours in duration.

Ballina Lions Club quiz 

Ballina Lions Club is hosting a quiz in The Loft Bar, Pearse Street, Ballina on Friday, February 9. The Fun Table Quiz will cost €40 for a group of four and there’s the promise of plenty of great raffle prizes. The quiz starts at 8.30pm.

Wool spinning at Craoibhín 

Craoibhín Ballina will provide an opportunity to learn how to spin your own wool in a workshop taking place soon. Annie from Killala Woolcraft will take participants through the art of drop spinning. The Tuesday session is from 2 to 5pm and more information can be had from Craoibhín by contacting 087-2785365. Craoibhín Ballina is located at Cathedral Road, Ballina.

Reusable party kits scheme

An unusual scheme from Mayo County Council has been getting widespread approval for its strong eco credentials. Party kits that include reusable cups, bowls, plates, cutlery, trays and jugs are available to borrow for free through Ballina Public Library.

The kits will cater for up to 30 people, and can be loaned out for a week. A deposit of €30 is payable, but the full deposit will be refunded once the kit has been returned complete, undamaged and washed to the library.
