The late Martin Roughneen

The death has occurred of Martin Roughneen, R.I.P, Station Road, Balla, Co. Mayo. ‘Marty’ as he was fondly known was the founder of The Irish Knights Band and he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. A renowned musician Marty brought joy and happiness to multiple people and couples down the years. He was hugely popular not alone for his musical talent but for his personal warmth and help to many people. Predeceased by his parents James and Annie and his brother Seamus he is deeply regretted by his son Micheál, granddaughter Shannon, daughter-in-law Maggie, Shannon’s partner Darragh, brothers Patsy (Balla) and Tom (Boston, his uncle John Gavin (Clooncan), sister-in-law Julie, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, neighbours and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Huge crowds attended as Martins remains reposed in Balla Funeral Home on Friday evening and his funeral arrived to St Cronan’s Church, Balla, on Saturday morning for his Requiem Mass at 11am with the funeral proceeding to the adjoining cemetery. Ar dheis De go raibh a nAinm.

Balla GAA lotto

Balla GAA Club lotto jackpot prize stood at €4,400 for the draw on Thursday, December 28, in The Shebeen. The numbers drawn were 1, 6, 19 and 3.There was no winner of the jackpot. The €30 winners were Padraic Cunnane (annual), Jimmy Walsh (online) and Paul Gannon (cash sale). The most recent draw was held on Thursday, January 4, when the jackpot stood at €4,500. Thanks to all who support Balla GAA lotto draws.

Manulla FC notes

Manulla FC wishes to invite all club members and welcome new members to their AGM on January 19. All items of interest should be sent to club secretary at manullafcsec@gmail.com before 5pm on January 17, 2024.

Manulla FC to thank everyone that made 2023 a very successful year for the club both on and off the field of play; to the many volunteers that give up their time free of charge to provide a safe environment for young people to grow and develop their love for the game and also to grow and develop their personalities, friendships and life skills; to all the people that support the fundraising events, business people, local authorities, public representatives and to the many sponsors that support Manulla FC club.

The clubs lotto jackpot stood at €12,400 for the January 2 draw. The numbers drawn were 6, 23, 30 and 31, and there was no jackpot winner. The 3 winners of €25 were Patrick Brampton, Balla; Rodger Clarke, Manulla and Catherine O Sullivan, Carrandine. The latest draw for a €12, 500 jackpot was on January 7. 2024 Calendar

The Manulla FC Girls Calendar for 2024 is in popular demand. It can be purchased in Costcutter Belcarra and is Centra Balla. Thanks also to Paul and Danny for selling them in their shops.

The cost is a modest €10, with all proceeds going towards training gear for the 2024 season. Sincere thanks are extended to Linda Cuffe and John Hennelly for compiling the calendar.

Crib appeal

All monies placed in the candelabra while the crib is in place will be donated to Sr Mary O'Malley to support her Missionary work in Kenya. The annual contribution enables Sr Mary to help many more people.

Living Well

Living Well is a free HSC programme which helps people with long term health conditions to manage and improve their overall wellbeing. The next online programme will commence on January 30, 2024. For further information contact Liam Gildea on 086 0142675 or lgildea@southmayo.com.

Balla Bingo

Balla bingo takes place on Sundays at Balla Community Centre or online at 8pm. There is €12,000+ in the prize fund with great prizes on the night, 50/50 winners in house and online, free book give away on the night. Don't forget to buy your books before 12 noon on Sundays.

Clogher Christmas raffle

Clogher Cards

The winners of the last card game of the old year at Clogher cards were as follows; 1st Bernie Heneghan and Eileen Moran, 2nd Margaret Mannion and Majella Corbett and Derek Quinn and Tommy Fahy, 3rd Joe and Shane Thomas. Post-Christmas Walk

Despite the heavy downpour a jolly group turned out for the annual post-Christmas walk at Clogher Heritage Centre and on part of the Clogher Bog Walk. With waterproof clothes and shoes, the walk proved enjoyable and was rounded off with tea and mince pies by the open fire in the cottage. Thanks to all who organised and took part in this event. Best wishes for the New Year to all walkers. The Tuesday evening walks will return at the start of summer 2024.
