The U-19 Boys Basketball Team from St. Brendan's College, Belmullet are in action today Tuesday, January 16, when they take part in the All Ireland Cup Final in the National Basketball Arena.

Kilmore Ladies Football Club Awards

A fantastic night was held in O' Raghallaigh's Pub, Binghamstown, on Friday, January 5, to honour Kilmore Ladies Football Club achievements in their first season back in Mayo Women's League and winning the Mary Walsh Memorial Cup. On the night, they had the presentation of the Home and Away kits from Togher Group and O'Raghallaigh's Pub respectively. There was also a presentation of training kits sponsored by An Builin Blasta and O' Donoghues Bakery. Congratulations to all the winners and a huge thank you to all the sponsors who has supported them throughout the year.

Most Improved Player Award went to Michelle Lavelle; Golden Boot to Annie Lynskey; Goal of the Season to Róisin Greene; Young Player of the Year to Amy Carey; Player of the Year to Eilish Coyle; Supporter of the Year to Cyril Lavelle; Club Person of the Year to Kieran Lavelle; and Hall of Fame was presented to Breda Reilly.

The club extend thanks to the Kilmore Community Sports Field committee for the use of their excellent facilities, they are so lucky to have such a facility in the community; and a big thank you also to the Kilmore FC lads for all their support, it is greatly appreciated. Here to 2024 and a successful season ahead.

Ballyglass RNLI comes to the aid of injured fisherman

Ballyglass RNLI came to the aid of an injured fisherman in the early hours of Sunday morning, January 7. The volunteer crew were requested to launch their all-weather lifeboat by Malin Head Coast Guard at 3am following a report of an injured fisherman. The request was for the lifeboat to meet the vessel the fisherman was on in Broadhaven Bay.

The lifeboat launched shorty after under coxswain Francie Gibbons and five crew onboard and made its way to the scene.Weather conditions at the time were blowing a south easterly force 2-3 wind and there was a 0.5-1m swell.

Arriving on scene at 4.30am, the lifeboat crew assessed the situation, and a decision was made to transfer the casualty onto the lifeboat where they were then brought back to shore at Ballyglass Lifeboat Station and handed into the care of the ambulance service at 5.10am. Ballyglass Coast Guard was also on hand to assist.

Speaking following the call out, Ballyglass RNLI coxswain Francie Gibbons said: ‘We would like to extend our best wishes to the casualty for a speedy recovery. We would also like to commend our own volunteers and our colleagues in the Coast Guard and ambulance service for their work in the early hours of the morning; this was an example of great collaboration between all the services involved.’ 

Kilcommon Community Development lotto

The draw was held on January 7, and the numbers drawn were 10, 11, 25 and 35, for a jackpot €11,500 with no winner. The house prize winner of €100 was Jace Neary, Inver and the 2 x €30 offline winners were Lexi Deane, Glengad and John Tighe, c/o Lighthouse Tavern. The 2 x €30 online winners were Pauline Coyle, Knocknalower and Jo Croghan, Roscommon. The latest jackpot was €11,600 with the draw being held in the Lighthouse Tavern, Inver.

Erris Family and Community Support Centre

The Erris Family and Community Support Centre is delighted to welcome Leah Owens, community-based family support worker for the Erris area to their team.

Leah and the community-based family support service (CBFSS) transferred over to Erris Family and Community Support Centre on January 1.

The board and the co-ordinator, Leanne is excited to work with Leah again. She was a member of the steering committee who campaigned to secure a centre in Erris and is very committed to the area and the needs of families locally.

The CBFSS aims to work in partnership with families who are experiencing challenges to develop an individualized plan to meet their specific needs. This is a free and completely confidential service.

Erris Pool League

The Erris Pool League calendar of events and a quick update. The Champion of Erris for 2024 will take place on February 10, followed by the Underage Champion of Erris the following day.

The Mayo Pool Championships are next up in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel the following weekend of February 17 and 18.

Finally the Mayo Pub Pool Championships will take place in Castlebar on the March 23, when the 2024 Cup and Shield winners will represent the Erris Pool League against the winners of the Castlebar/Westport and Achill Leagues.

Meanwhile, Mayo Pool returned with a bang after the Christmas break with a New Year bringing a new Holmes to the list of title holders this season, Edmund Holmes this time was the 3rd Mayo major, ‘The Grand Prix’ Champion after his brother Colin had won the last one in Achill. This took place in ‘The Castle Cue Club’ in Castlebar on January 6 and 7, with a record 96 entrants having their name in the draw.

It was an Erris treble as Rita Walsh was also crowned the ladies Grand Prix champion and 'The Bullet from Belmullet' Dermot Barrett took out the Plate competition. It was former Mayo Champion Ed Holmes who played the best pool over the two days in a tough side of the draw as he had to get past Mayo (A) players Sean Conway (Swinford/Foxford), Michael Golden (Castlebar/Balla) and Declan Hough (Ballaghaderreen) before taking the title by defeating Liam Cannon (Ballintubber) in the final 9- 5.

Belmullet Golf Club 2023 in review

Congratulations to Martin Cosgrove who was crowned Golfer of the Year for 2023. Martin with a total score of 100pts edged out gallant runner up Cormac O'Muirithe. Well done to Martin who wins the Golfer of the Year title for the 3rd year in a row.

Thanks to the generous sponsors who supported the Golfer of the Year competitions throughout 2023. Thanks also to John Hanley for updating the standings after each week, Kevin Donnelly for maintaining the Twos competition and finally competition secretary Peter Mulry for his work throughout the year.

Congratulations to Cormac O'Muirithe who was crowned Stroke Player of the Year for 2023. The best 6 gross scores out of 10 qualifying competitions were taken into consideration. Cormac excelled in these competitions and with a total of 439 strokes was a clear winner year and was in a class of his own seeing his handicap drop to +2 in the process, another significant milestone that deserves huge recognition.

Well done to Cormac who wins the Stroke Player title for the third time.

The season long twos competition ended in a two way tie with Martin Cosgrove and Cormac Ó Muirithe both having 11 birdies on the Par 3s.

2023 was again a lean year when it came to the inter-club scene for the club. A combination of tough away draws and strong opposition resulted in a limited run in all competitions.

The Erris United/ Iorras Aontaithe FC awards for the 2023 season were held in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel on January 5. The MC was Des O’Connor and congratulations to all the winners. If they win the Rugby sevens, it's one medal. If they win in show jumping, its one medal, the horse doesn't get an extra one. You can collect Official Sports Genius entries from Carey's or from any committee member.

Sean McHale won in 2023, this year it could be you, or your wife, girlfriend, husband, boyfriend, mum, dad, nanny, gaga, workmate, neighbour, etc,etc. Tell everyone about them and Erris Utd will be very grateful. It's only a tenner, it lasts a year and you can win €500 just in time for Christmas.

Kiltane GAA Club news

There was no winner of this week’s Kiltane GAA Club weekly lotto jackpot of €10,900 with the two €50 winners being Amy and Sara Munnelly, Geesala and Mick Kelly, c/o Sea Rod Inn while Christopher Doran, Ballycroy and Paul Deane, Glenamoy both won €25. The two online winners were Dermot Barrett, Geesala €50 and Martin McManamon, Bangor, €25.

Bingo will continue in the complex in Bangor this Tuesday, January 16, at 8pm with a €700 jackpot in 49 calls or less.

Conversational Irish classes

Cill Chomáin GAA is organising conversational Irish classes in the clubhouse at Gleann na Muaidhe every Thursday at 7pm, and they are resuming on January 25. The class will help to improve your vocabulary and fluency in the language. Anyone who would like to improve on their existing ability is welcome to attend in a welcoming and informal setting. Scór Sinsear/Senior Scór 

The county final of Senior Scór will be held in Balla Community Centre on Friday, March 22. The night begins with the quiz at 7pm. This will be followed by stage events in dancing, singing, recitation/drama and instrumental music. Further enquiries to local GAA clubs or scor.mayo@gaa.ie.

Bereavement Support Group

The weekly Bereavement Support Group meet every Wednesday at 11am in the Family Centre Knock. These meetings aim to help those who are grieving to find healing, hope and comfort. All are welcome. Contact Monica Morley on 094-9375320 for more information.

Grow is a mental health support program based on lived experience. This mean Grow groups are a meeting of peers, who are striving to develop and maintain good mental health.

If you would like to know more, call your local GROW office on 1800 558 268. You can also register for ‘Welcome to Grow’, the online orientation session. This will give you an introduction to how meetings work and an opportunity to ask questions. You can also search for a group close by to you by using Find a Group and just turning up. No registrations are needed.
