GAA Christmas Cracker Weekend

Don't forget the Ballaghaderreen Christmas Cracker Weekend coming up on Friday, December 15, Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17.

On Friday, December 15, the Danny Byrne Band are live in The Brusna Inn; on Saturday December 16, it's Brusna Bingo Bonanza with proceeds from the two nights going to Ballaghaderreen GAA Club. Tickets are on sale on Eventbrite.

On Sunday, December 17, the Ronan Regan Memorial Tractor Run takes place with proceeds to Ballaghaderreen GAA Club and Aoibheann's Pink Tie, in memory of CJ McCann. Registration takes place on the day.

Calendar Full of Hearts for charity

Community Art Group Ballaghaderreen have made a calendar for 2024 full of hearts in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. It is for sale for €8 in nine shops in Ballaghaderreen. The images come from the 10x10 cm canvases the art group made for their HeArt4U project. They were displayed during the Ballaghdream Festival this summer. The canvases have now been wrapped in cellophane and are being distributed in Ballaghaderreen and further afield for people to find and take home. With the calendar, even more people are able to enjoy them. The shops are BB hair, Brian Mulligan's, First Class Office/School Supplies, Imelda Towey's, Michael Mulligan's, Molloy’s Pharmacy, Newsround, Padraig Mulligan's and SuperValu. The calendar makes a lovely Christmas present and the proceeds go to a good cause.

Carol service

A carol service and nativity play will take place in The Cathedral of The Annunciation and St. Nathy on Thursday, December 14, at 7pm featuring The Cathedral Choir, Cathedral Folk Group, Schools of the Parish and guests. There will be a raffle on the night and all proceeds are in aid of the upkeep of the cathedral and churches of the parish. Admission is €10.

GAA 50/50 draw

The Ballaghaderreen GAA club 50/50 draw took place on Sunday, December 3, in Solans Bar, New St. The jackpot of €510 was won by Dettie Shannon, Frenchpark and the seller was Imelda Towey. Tickets can be purchased at various outlets in the town. An annual 50/50 ticket for €90 giving entry into every draw in the year is available from committee members. Choral Music at the Museum

Enjoy a weekend of Christmas carols at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar on Saturday and Sunday, December 16 and 17. The Rock ‘n’ Roses Choir who are an inspirational group of cancer survivors will perform at 3pm on Saturday, December 16. The Mayo Male Voice Choir will perform at 3pm and the Cill Aodain Choral Society will perform at 4pm on Sunday, December 17. All are welcome. Admission is free and no booking required.

Let Live Shine a Light Christmas cards

Remember a loved one living or deceased this Christmas by sponsoring a light on the tree at Knock Shrine. Shine a Light cards are available in local chemists or from Kathleen Rushe on 087 4156033 at a cost of €5 each. Christmas cards packs are also available for €6 for a pack of 12 cards.

Set Dancing classes

Set dancing classes will be held in O’Dowd’s Lounge, Monasteraden every Thursday night at 8pm. All welcome.

Soccer club 50/50 draw

The Soccer Club 50/50 weekly draw took place on Tuesday, December 5, at the Community Park Clubhouse. The jackpot of €253 was won by John Dooney and the seller was the Old Forge Inn. The next draw takes place this evening, Tuesday, December 12, at the Community Park Clubhouse.

Ballaghaderreen Golf

On Thursday, November 23, Fr. Paul Kivlehan along with members of the golf club celebrated the annual November Remembrance Mass for deceased members of the club in the clubhouse. Votes of sympathy were expressed to the Mc Cann, Kelly, Keenan, Kiernan and Tobin/Neilan families on their recent sad losses.

The annual general meeting took place immediately afterwards and the following officers were elected for 2024. Men’s Captain Danny Browne; Men’s Vice Captain Conor Sweeney: Lady Captain Sarah Mc Donagh; Lady Vice Captain Eithne McGarry; President Michael Towey; Chairperson John Freeman; Secretary Helen Curran; Treasurer James Dooney; Course Manager Martin Duffy; Registrar Brendan Cox; Committee Anne O’ Brien, Eoin Buckley, Gerry Cooney, Breege Flanagan, Patricia Reid and Pauline Gibbons.

The club thank outgoing officers Maura Madden, Sean Kavanagh, Paul McLoughlin, Pauline Gibbons and Colm Flannery for making 2023 such a successful golfing year for the club. Men’s Shed card drive

The Men’s Shed Card Drive will be held in Ballaghaderreen Men’s Shed on Thursday, December 14, from 8-10pm. There will be numerous prizes on offer and all are welcome.

Bingo

Flourish Social Prescribing Service

Flourish Social Prescribing Service in conjunction with the HSE and delivered through The Family Centre, Castlebar, is now available in the Kilmovee and East Mayo area. Lisa is the link worker in the area and is available to confidentially meet you to discuss ways in which you can connect with your local community. Do you sometimes feel your life could be more enjoyable? Have you recently experienced a change in life such as; retirement, health issue, becoming a parent, change in employment, new to your area, relationship changes etc?

If so, Flourish maybe for you. Flourish will also be running programmes in the East Mayo area over the winter period such as ‘The John Hoban Music Circle’, ‘Introduction to Journalling workshop’, ‘Reconnect to Wellbeing’, walk and talk groups and more. Music Memory

Western Alzheimer’s Roscommon Dementia Music Memory group is suitable for individuals with dementia and their plus one (family or carer) every Thursday in Quad Roscommon Youth Centre F42 CH70. The group meet from 11.30am to 1pm. Contact 094 93 64900 for more details.

Bereavement Support meetings

Trained facilitators conduct a weekly bereavement support meeting at the Family Centre, Knock Shrine each Wednesday at 11am. There is also a special meeting for bereaved partners/spouses on the first Thursday of each month at 11am. No appointment is necessary. For further information contact Monica Morley on 094 9375320.

Enable Ireland

Enable Ireland Mayo Services require volunteers in all areas of County Mayo to work with children with a disability. Volunteers usually work one-to-one with a child within their home but also within their community or at the centre in Castlebar. Training is provided. Grow 

Grow is a mental health support program based on lived experience. This mean Grow groups are a meeting of peers, who are striving to develop and maintain good mental health. If you would like to know more, call your local GROW office on 1800 558 268. You can also register for ‘Welcome to Grow’, the online orientation session. This will give you an introduction to how meetings work and an opportunity to ask questions. You can also search for a group close by to you by using Find a Group and just turning up. No registrations are needed.

Age Action

Age Action is Ireland’s leading advocacy organisation for older people and ageing. As well as informing and influencing policy they provide practical programmes to support older people to age in place and combat digital exclusion through their Care and Repair, Getting Started and Information Service.
